A Positive Attitude Helped This Local Teacher Win $500

A Herculaneum teacher won $500 for leaving a positive mark on students and staff.

Andrew Miller teaches Spanish at Herculaneum High School of the Dunklin R-5 School District. According to one of his former students, “He always comes in with a smile, ready to help others.”

“He has been involved in bringing the community together, (he’s been) the jokester in every pep assembly and the teacher that has left a mark on everyone,” Emily Schultz, one of Miller’s past students, said.

Schultz nominated Miller for KPLR’s Tools For Teachers award of $500 from Weber Chevrolet “due to his dedication and selflessness that he continues to give to students.”

Both Schultz and Miller joined KPLR 11 Monday, Jan. 27, 2020 so that Miller could receive his $500 award.

Nomination: In the past 9 years Mr.Miller has had many difficult times. He lost two children, Seth and Eliza to an extremely rare genetic disease called TTC7A deficiency (more information on the Hope for Eliza Facebook page). They both died at the ages of 1 and 2, on October 9th 4 years apart. During this time Mr.Miller drove countless hours across the country to Cincinnati and back to be there for his children’s treatment and to be back to work. Even when his children were at their worst, he would always come in with a smile ready to help others even when he has barely slept in days. He has been involved in bringing the community together, the jokester in every pep assembly, and the teacher that always left a mark on everyone. He makes learning fun. I’ve learned more from a semester in Spanish with him than I have at my college because of his love for teaching. I believe that Mr. Miller deserves this award due to his dedication and selflessness that he continues to give to his students and because he is in thousands of dollars in debt from trying to save his children. The monetary amount would allow him to be able to purchase anything he needs for his classroom without pulling from his pocket, most of the books he has are falling apart but are too expensive for him to replace.
